Description and Message
Hello, I am trying to edit my .htaccess file and add some code which will hopefully enable Gzip compression. I have opened the file with notepad++.. Im not sure which line I should add the code.

the .htaccess file as it is now.

Code: Select all
#
# Uncomment the statement below if you want to make use of
# HTTP authentication and it does not already work.
# This could be required if you are for example using PHP via Apache CGI.
#
#<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
#RewriteEngine on
#RewriteRule .* - [E=HTTP_AUTHORIZATION:%{HTTP:Authorization},L]
#</IfModule>

<Files "config.php">
Order Allow,Deny
Deny from All
</Files>

<Files "common.php">
Order Allow,Deny
Deny from All
</Files>

    ExpiresActive On
    ExpiresByType text/html "access plus 1 month"
    ExpiresByType image/gif "access plus 10 years"
    ExpiresByType image/jpeg "access plus 10 years"
    ExpiresByType image/png "access plus 10 years"
    ExpiresByType text/css "access plus 10 years"
    ExpiresByType text/javascript "access plus 10 years"
    ExpiresByType application/x-javascript "access plus 10 years"

the code I want to add:

Code: Select all
# compress text, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and XML
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/plain
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/xml
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/css
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/xml
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/xhtml+xml
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/rss+xml
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/javascript
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-javascript

# remove browser bugs
BrowserMatch ^Mozilla/4 gzip-only-text/html
BrowserMatch ^Mozilla/4\.0[678] no-gzip
BrowserMatch \bMSIE !no-gzip !gzip-only-text/html
Header append Vary User-Agent

Any idea where I should insert it, which line?

anytime you want to add something to a htaccess file you always start a new line. it doesn't matter if it is at the top of bottom.

why do you think you need to turn on gzip? if your host already has it turned on and you try to turn it on again, it will cause you problems.

I have rarely seen a need for it to be on for a phpbb board.

You have no idea what I went through Robert, basically they were trying to sell me a VPS package, for a silly little board which rarely has more than ten people on at a time.. I moved back to HG, the propagation has just completed, I need help, the site has a maintenance screen I cannot login. to the ACP to sort it out
